An Norfolk arable farm hopes to install an array of solar panels to help water its crops.

Agent EWF Consulting has applied to site the array on land at Pooly Farm at Northwold, near Thetford.

It comes as controversy rages over proposals for much larger solar "mega-farms" on thousands of acres of farmland elsewhere in Norfolk, including what would be the UK's largest if it gets the go-ahead.

The more modest array at Pooly Farm would be positioned on 2,800 sq m of land south of the A134 Thetford Road and screened by hedgerows.

It would help power pumps which supply water from a nearby irrigation reservoir to the farm's fields.

A planning statement says: "The farm owners are committed to reducing their energy usage and moving towards a low-carbon future.

"The farm has on average 26 ha of irrigable crops, which result in electricity consumption, one of the largest contributors to their carbon and energy footprint."

The statement adds it would help the business work towards energy self-sufficiency.
